With most fireplaces, your damper is usually located just above the smoke chamber and the damper handle is located at the top of the firebox. You always open the damper before you burn, to let the smoke and gases to escape the home. When you are done burning, you close the damper to keep the warm air from escaping.
Pretty simple, so it seems; but the problem that occurs with the traditional ‘old school’ throat dampers is that when closed, it’s a rigid metal to metal seal and allows your heat and air conditioning to leak right out of your chimney.
Another problem is when you mix metal with moisture you get rust. Ever try to open or close a stuck damper? They are pretty useless.
With the skyrocketing cost of heating and cooling, can you really afford to watch your money seep through the cracks of a poorly designed damper?
Technology has changed
With the design of top mount dampers, you no longer have to worry about your money flying out of your chimney. Top mount dampers have a silicone gasket that when closed, seals completely around the top of your chimney flue. Not only keeping air from escaping, they keep animals, moisture and debris from finding their way inside.
Top mount dampers are not an expensive replacement. Installing a new damper can save you hundreds of dollars a year in heating costs. Even if your throat damper is working fine, think of replacing it as a proactive approach to energy efficiency.
The top mount damper is mounted on the top flue tile, the old throat damper can either be removed or left in the open position. A stainless steel cable is dropped down through the chimney and connected to the inside of the firebox on the side and acts as a handle. When you want to use your fireplace, just pull the handle, the spring at the top of the damper pops open and your ready to burn. Even when the damper is open, the chimney cap protects your chimney from weather and unwanted critters. Our top-mount dampers come with a lifetime warranty.
