Chimney Crown Repair

The chimney crown that covers the top of the chimney minus the flue opening is a protective component that keeps rain, snow and debris out of interior chimney spaces.

When crowns become damaged, they must be either repaired or rebuilt, depending on the extent of the damage. Anderson’s Chimney & Masonry Service of New Cumberland, PA, has been resolving chimney crown issues for our customers since 1990. Here’s how we can help you.

How Chimney Crowns Get Damaged

Typically made of a mortar slab and sometimes referred to as a “crown wash,” a chimney crown can be damaged in several ways. The most common include:

  • Lightning strikes
  • Pounding hail
  • Ongoing extreme weather temperatures
  • Poor-quality mortar
  • Shoddy workmanship
  • Chimney fires
  • Old age

Chimney crowns may show small cracks in their surfaces; they also may become partially or completely deteriorated. Whatever the extent of the damage, it should be addressed quickly.

Problems Caused By A Damaged Crown

Anderson’s certified technicians have seen and resolved a wide range of problems that began with damaged chimney crowns and spread throughout the system. For example:

  • Decay and crumbling of chimney masonry, resulting in structural instability
  • Chimney liner damage that can lead to flue fires and the escape of smoke and deadly carbon monoxide
  • Mold growth in unseen areas of the home
  • Water damage to fireplace dampers and fireboxes
  • Rotting in building materials of the home near the chimney
  • Musty odors seeping into the home from rotting debris and mold

A crown leak is often the beginning of major issues that can be very expensive to remedy. Always remember that water is a chimney’s #1 enemy, so be on the lookout for signs of water damage and leaks anywhere in your system.

It’s also smart to schedule an annual chimney inspection so we can address early instances of water intrusion and other problems and get them fixed before they get out of hand.

Resolving Chimney Crown Issues

Our masons start by determining the extent of the crown damage and locating any collateral damage that may have occurred. If the crown has minor cracks, we can seal them with a product called CrownSeal. Small areas of missing material can be patched and then sealed.

Crowns with extensive damage, such as when large sections have crumbled away, usually need to be completely rebuilt. For this work, we use a top-grade mortar that our skilled masons fashion into a beautiful, functional new crown. The crown will feature a slight overhang to encourage rain and snow to fall away from the vulnerable chimney masonry below.

And, of course, our work will be done in compliance with all state and local code requirements.
