The Dangers of Compromised Masonry
Chimney masonry damage is often just the start of a variety of serious problems:
- Ongoing deterioration that makes a chimney lean to one side or collapse entirely
- Severe cracking after intruding water freezes and expands within the bricks
- Water damage to nearby home building materials, sections of the chimney below the roof and the roof itself
- Damage to the attic, floors, ceilings and walls
- Mold growth that can spread throughout the home
- An ugly visual, with discoloration, missing bricks and the look of an ancient monument sticking out of your roof
How We Do Brick & Mortar Repair
Anderson’s has been performing all levels of masonry repair and chimney rebuilding for decades. We know how to spot early signs of problems, and we know exactly how to fix larger problems, no matter their extent or severity. Most basic chimney repair work centers on brick replacement and tuckpointing.
Brick Replacement
After an inspection, our masons may recommend replacing specific bricks that have begun to spall (flake) and take on water. We’ll match your original bricks so your chimney maintains a “natural” look.
After the new bricks are in place, we’ll seal-coat the entire masonry surface with a product called ChimneySaver to prevent future water intrusion.
Tuckpointing
Tuckpointing is a process Anderson’s masons use to remove degraded mortar between chimney bricks and add fresh new mortar in its place.
Mortar joints can become compromised for many reasons, including a poor-quality compound used to create the joints originally. Strong replacement mortar will add strength and stability to your chimney while giving it a neat and orderly appearance.
Severely Damaged Chimneys
If masonry damage is severe, our crew can rebuild sections of your chimney or the entire chimney from the ground up. All chimney repair work starts with an inspection, which will tell us precisely what’s happening and what to do about it.
Note that our chimney repair and rebuilding services are all done in strict compliance with state and local code requirements.
