Chimney Rebuilding

A well-built chimney will last for many years and provide you with safety and efficiency. But time takes its toll. Eventually, the chimney structure will start to fail and, if ignored, end up causing many serious and possibly dangerous problems.

Anderson’s Chimney & Masonry Service of New Cumberland, PA, has been rebuilding and repairing chimneys since 1990. We understand how chimneys work and how they’re built, and we can help you restore safety and performance to yours.

Signs of a Severely Damaged Chimney

You’re probably aware of these signs to watch for, but it never hurts to refresh:

  • The chimney is leaning to one side
  • Bricks are loose to the touch
  • Sections of the masonry have fallen away
  • Mortar is crumbling and leaving gaps between the bricks
  • Major discoloration is present throughout the masonry

Causes of the Damage

Old age and the neglect of repair work when it becomes necessary are the most common reasons for a chimney getting to the point where it needs to be rebuilt. Trouble with the chimney footing and normal house-settling can also damage the structure.

Other things that can cause severe chimney damage include:

  • Lightning strikes
  • Pounding hail
  • Gale-force winds
  • Earthquakes
  • A major chimney fire or house fire
  • Falling tree branches

Rebuilding a Chimney

Chimney rebuilding can focus on certain compromised sections within the chimney structure; it can also be a complete tear-down project with a new chimney built from the ground up.

This work may appear fairly straightforward, but nothing could be further from the truth. Chimney rebuilding should be performed only by experienced masons, such as those who work for Anderson’s. The shoddy brickwork with inferior materials that’s common with inexperienced builders will put your chimney right back to where it was when you realized you needed help in the first place.

Our masons are experts at not only partially and completely rebuilding chimneys, but they’re 100% current on all state and local code requirements that govern building and fire safety. We know how to rebuild your chimney correctly.

Chimney Masonry Repairs

After an inspection, we may advise you that the chimney doesn’t require rebuilding but rather just some smart repair work. This can involve:

Brick replacement: We’ll add strong new bricks where old bricks have begun to spall, take on water and deteriorate.

Tuckpointing: This process scrapes out decayed mortar between the bricks and adds a fresh new compound to strengthen the entire chimney structure.

Chimney crown repair: The protective crown at the top of your chimney may be cracked and deteriorated. We can repair minor damage or build an entirely new crown.

Chimney waterproofing: After repair work is done, we’ll seal-coat the masonry and crown with a waterproofing solution to prevent the intrusion of moisture in the future.
