Custom Chimney Caps

The top of a chimney, including the flue opening and chimney crown, is a vulnerable area. Without a proper chimney cap, the system can become damaged by water and obstructed by debris and small animals.

Anderson’s Chimney & Masonry Service of New Cumberland, PA, installs custom full-width chimney caps to prevent a wide range of problems.

Different Types of Chimney Tops

A simple component called a flue cover features mesh sides and a solid top and does a good job of keeping rain, snow, tree debris and small animals out of the chimney.

A full-width chimney cap raises the level of protection: not only does it guard the flue opening, but it also protects the chimney crown and the masonry below it.

Full-size chimney caps include a “roof” that extends at a slight downward angle beyond the sides of the chimney. This forces rain and snow to fall away from the crown and masonry.

You can choose either a stainless-steel model or a copper model. Stainless steel is more economical, but both styles will give you many years of beauty, performance and protection.

The Dangers of an Open Chimney

Many people still run their chimneys with no type of cover over the flue, and they end up paying for it down the line. Chimneys without a protective chimney cap can experience some sizeable problems. Here are the most common.

Tree Debris

Leaves, twigs, falling fruit and other debris can accumulate inside a chimney flue and block the drafting of smoke and combustion gases. The biggest concern here is carbon monoxide, a gas that can be dangerous to people and animals.

Water Intrusion

When water from rain and melting snow enters a chimney from the top, it can damage the interior chimney masonry, chimney liner, fireplace damper and firebox. Additionally, it can start a cycle of rotting in ceilings, walls, floors and the roof.

Moisture in the chimney structure can also cause mold to form and spread to other areas of your home.

Animals

Birds, squirrels, rodents, raccoons and other small animals often seek shelter from the elements in open chimneys. Some of the animals use the space to have their babies.

Nesting material and the occasional deceased animal that couldn’t get out of the chimney can cause a draft blockage and create some horrible smells that filter into your house.

Chimney Crown

Chimney crowns are vulnerable to cracking. When water gets into the cracks, it can freeze and expand, causing further deterioration. More water can then move down into the chimney structure, resulting in a lot of damage that’s difficult and expensive to fix.

Additional Benefits of Custom Chimney Caps

In addition to keeping water, debris and animals out of your chimney and protecting the crown, a full-width chimney cap offers you three other important benefits:

  • Keeps sparks and embers from leaving the top of the flue
  • Reduces downdrafts that blow smoke, ash and fiery particles out of the fireplace
  • Gives the top of your chimney a lovely, dignified appearance that can be seen by everyone who passes it
  • Full-Width Chimney Cap Installation
