The Dangers of an Open Chimney

Many people still run their chimneys with no type of cover over the flue, and they end up paying for it down the line. Chimneys without a protective chimney cap can experience some sizeable problems. Here are the most common.

Tree Debris

Leaves, twigs, falling fruit and other debris can accumulate inside a chimney flue and block the drafting of smoke and combustion gases. The biggest concern here is carbon monoxide, a gas that can be dangerous to people and animals.

Water Intrusion

When water from rain and melting snow enters a chimney from the top, it can damage the interior chimney masonry, chimney liner, fireplace damper and firebox. Additionally, it can start a cycle of rotting in ceilings, walls, floors and the roof.

Moisture in the chimney structure can also cause mold to form and spread to other areas of your home.

Animals

Birds, squirrels, rodents, raccoons and other small animals often seek shelter from the elements in open chimneys. Some of the animals use the space to have their babies.

Chimney crowns are vulnerable to cracking. When water gets into the cracks, it can freeze and expand, causing further deterioration. More water can then move down into the chimney structure, resulting in a lot of damage that’s difficult and expensive to fix.
