You can also use a mixture of warm water, vinegar and baking soda to clean inside your fireplace. 

The challenge is that chimney cleaning is not a great DIY project. Even if you’re careful, you can damage the masonry and fail to eliminate all the creosote that can be a risk for chimney fires.
